ROSE FESTIVAL
Every year, on the last Saturday of May, the town of Karlovo becomes the capital of the most beautiful and fragrant flower – the rose.
Here, at Château Copsa, the festival begins with the ritual “Rose-picking”. We wake up at dawn and together with our guests and friends we go riding to the rose fields near the Château. Young women, whose colourful folklore costumes blend in with the colours of the rose bushes, fill the bright blue sky with folk songs and welcome us with hot, just out of the oven bread and honey. Is there something better and more romantic than having breakfast among the rose fields and looking at the Balkan Mountains at dawn? The Château Copsa chef offers us home-made and freshly baked delights for breakfast – banitsa, mekitsa, hot croissants and cookies.
From the rose fields we visit the rose processing plant – where the magic happens, where the rose petals turn into the precious rose oil that has made Bulgaria famous worldwide.
Then the festival continues in the central square of Karlovo. There lads carry the Rose Queen – the most beautiful girl of the festival. Wearing a wreath made of roses and showered with flowers, she welcomes the guests of the festival.
Then the celebrations begin with a lot of songs and dances. The air is filled with the chimes of the kukeri’s bells. The folklore part of the festival ends with the traditional Bulgarian folklore dance horo.
Traditionally, on this day, an art exhibition is open, craftsmen and artists present traditional handicrafts and applied arts objects.
Guests from all over the world gather on the last weekend of May in Karlovo to enjoy the authentic and unique Bulgarian Rose Festival.
